Spiral Jetty 1970

Spiral jetty, arguably the most significant and easily the most recognized of the earthworks, is an appropriate delegate for this genre of art. Built of rocks and earth on the northeastern shore of the Great Salt Lake, the work has been slowly degraded by the natural processes of erosion and decomposition since its completion in 1970. Its massive scale and hearty materials are what have allowed the structure to endure this constant battle with a rising and falling lake as well as it has. Spiral jetty was designed to outlive the humans that created it--built for what geologists refer to as geologic time.
